Athlete Host Commonwealth Games 2022

Back in January, Sharon Bhatoe, Well-being Co-ordinator at Albion Court Care Home in Birmingham, volunteered for the role of athlete’s host at the Commonwealth Games, having been born and bred in the area, and thinking it would be a great opportunity.

The Commonwealth Games is an international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth of Nations and is held every four years. The games aim to unite the nations in a colourful celebration of sport and human performance. This year Birmingham was host to the largest Commonwealth Games ever held, with the participation of 72 nations, and for the first time in history, more medals were awarded to women than men.

Sharon was lucky to be chosen as the host for the Zambian team and thoroughly enjoyed looking after the athletes, showing them where the amenities were situated and escorting them to parades. Sharon said, “They were lovely to get to know and made me feel very welcome and part of their team.” Sharon received great support from Albion Court staff, with residents and their families saying how proud they were of her involvement. On reminiscing about the games, Sharon stated, “I had the best time ever and enjoyed the whole experience. Especially being a part of the opening and closing ceremonies. It was a great honour to participate in the Commonwealth Games 2022.”
