A Blue Light Celebration for Edna
Moving into a care home doesn’t mean leaving behind your previous hobbies and interests. When Jean, Well-being Co-ordinator at Astbury Manor Care Home in Bracknell, spent time chatting with resident Edna, she discovered she is a keen knitter.
After a bit of research, Jean discovered Trauma Bears, which are knitted and distributed to the fire, ambulance, police and ambulance services to be given to children who are feeling distressed at the scene of an emergency. Edna has since knitted and donated 30 bears to the worthy cause and has also knitted them for friends and staff members at the cost of £3 each, so far raising £52.50 for The Fire Fighters Charity.
Celebrating her 100th birthday on the 5th of October, Edna was delighted to receive a surprise visit from Bracknell Fire Services. They wished her a happy birthday and enjoyed a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Pleased to receive the trauma bears, Watch Manager Richie Sage said: “I am sure they will be put to good use but not too often, I hope!” Edna replied: “I hope that the children get as much enjoyment out of them as I have had making them.” Although she declined a fireman’s lift, Edna said she wouldn’t mind wearing a fireman’s helmet – so she did!
