Supporting Mental Well-being Through Activities

It is well documented that mental and physical health are intrinsically linked; physical activity is one of the core ways of keeping on top of your health. According to the Mental Health Foundation, “Physical activity has a huge potential to enhance our well-being. Even a short burst of 10 minutes’ brisk walking increases our mental alertness, energy and positive mood.” But for older adults, physical activity and exercise include recreational or leisurely activity too.

At Avery, integrating elements of physical activity into our everyday lives is an integral part of our ethos; we know that it is beneficial for our residents’ well-being and increasing their moods. Therefore, our dedicated activities staff encourage involvement as best they can.

When physical classes were halted due to the pandemic, our staff and residents took to services such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams to undertake physical activity, be it chair yoga or gentle stretches. Our residents adapted well to the change in how we approach physical activity, which has become something we now incorporate in day-to-day activities across our homes.

The weather and time of the year can impact a person’s reluctance to exercise. Getting out and about when it is cold and dark can feel a challenge, so try spending as much time in the sunshine as you can during the winter months. Ask a friend to join you for a walk, even if it’s just a couple of laps in the garden.

There are many helpful resources you can turn to on the internet, including Joe Wick’s weekly workouts and Yoga with Adrienne.
