Newcross awarded £10,000 for Live Music Now Project!

Recently, Friends of Newcross has partnered up with Live Music Now to provide access to live music for older people living in residential care. From this partnership, Newcross Care Home in Wolverhampton has been awarded £10,000 for Live Music Now to attend the home for twelve months as part of a new project at our home!

For nearly four decades, Live Music Now provides high-quality interactive concerts in community settings, such as care homes and hospitals, across the UK. It is supported by Attend, Friends of Newcross and the Big Lottery Fund. The project, which started at the beginning of February 2018, encourages our residents and staff to come together with interactive music sessions and produce music, enjoy live performances and even create our own instruments.

So far, the sessions have focused on a selection of musicians coming into our home and bringing their instruments for us to listen to their different sounds, rhythms and genres of music. Nearly every fortnightly session has a different group coming in to teach us. We’re excited to see how this develops into getting play music ourselves!

The project will also build confidence in our staff in leading the sessions too. “It’s very rewarding” commented Vanessa, our Well-being and Activities Co-ordinator who has attended all of the sessions so far. “We have a full room every time now!”

A few of our residents have been musicians and have responded very positively to the programme! One resident, previously in the Wolverhampton Male Voice Choir, has enjoyed getting back into singing in particular.

We’re excited to see how the project continues through the year!
